Christian Fairy Tale Devotional: Unraveling Fairytales

First, I would like to share an awesome short powerful devotional whose purpose is retelling fairy tales through a Christ-centered lens. Unraveling Fairytales takes 10 weeks (5 Devos Each) to explore famous fairy tales looking for real-life spiritual truth and application with an eye towards experiencing God on a personal level. The Christian Fairy Tale devotionals include:

  • Cinderella (Embracing Your True Identity)
  • Little Red Riding Hood (Spiritual Warfare)
  • Sleeping Beauty (Awakened by the Lord)
  • Little Red Hen (Work and Worship)
  • The Princess and the PEA (Perspective, Expectation and Attitude)
  • Chicken Little (Discernment and Maturity)
  • Rapunzel (Rescued and Free)
  • Rumplestiltskin (Redeemend and Righteous)
  • Snow White (Spotless Bride)

It would be really hard to pick a favorite, because each one was good. In most cases each day picked a specific element or character to explore and parallel in Christ.

Little Red Riding Hood being used for spiritual warfare was cool, because one of the first points was that we need to be aware of the dangers. Red’s mother told her to stay on the path, but didn’t warn her about the wolf. So she had no idea she needed to be careful…

And then there was The Little Red Hen, and how if she was a Christian, and was in regular communication with God, Then when she found the wheat in the first place, she would have asked God what to do with it. At different times in her life, could have received different answers, such as “Give it away, and I’ll give you more” or “eat and enjoy this special treat” or “Plant it, and reap a harvest of 30x this amount” based on God’s plans and lessons. Staying in tune with the Holy Spirit is critical to our lives!

I really liked the use of acronyms and other memory tricks to help us retain the information. There are several, and each one is helpful and meshes well with the fairy tale.

The author gifted me an e-copy of this book of Christian fairy tale adaptations/devotionals, which I enjoyed enough that I’ll be ordering a paperback for my collection. I chose to review it here, and all thoughts are my own.

From the Authors of These Fairy Tale Adaptations

Dear Readers,

Thank you for stopping by the Celebrate Lit blog tour of Once Upon a Christmas. We are so excited to bring you this Christmas collection of fairy tale adaptations. All of us had a lot of fun writing it as we delved into the fairy tales of Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, Snow White, Cinderella, and The Little Mermaid.

What we discovered when writing is that in the heart of every girl is the desire to be a princess. Now, I’m not talking about dressing up in a beautiful gown and wearing a crown while twirling around (although I, Toni, admit I would do that in a heartbeat). No, we discovered that in the heart of every girl (sister, mom, daughter, etc) is the desire to be loved and accepted.

Can Talia find someone who can accept all of her, including her health issues? Will Amala find someone who will love her for her and not her money? Can Li find acceptance for who she truly is and not the façade she presents? Will Ella find a familial kind of love? And Gabrielle, can she find a love so powerful that all her dreams will come true?

As the heroines of our stories journey down their path to love and acceptance, they all come to realize a deep-seated truth. They are loved. Princesses. They have a love of a King who laid down His life for theirs. A King who is preparing a home for them. A King who sees who they truly are and loves them without hesitation.

As you read these stories, we pray they touch your heart. We pray they entertain you and maybe even make you laugh a time or two. And lastly, we pray the Christmas truths bless you this holiday season.

Blessings,

Andrea Boyd at www.andreaboyd11.com.

Why You’ll Love These Fairy Tales with a Modern Twist

I first opened the fairy tale retellings collection, and my kindle said “Estimated time to read, 9 hours 45 minutes”I thought it might last me a couple of weeks, but I finished it in 3 days…

I’m not sure I can pick a favorite fairytale retelling. Mulan was hilarious, inspiring, and convicting at the same time. So was Snow White. Ethics lessons are well demonstrated in both.

Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, well, watching the Prince pursue his princess… This was done so well! Pointing to Jesus’ patient pursuit of us, against the odds…

Little Mermaid had suspense and real courage. And was set in the SW desert. Which is just plain funny to find the Little Mermaid in the desert-and yet she pulled it off beautifully!
It was also a nice treat to visit Albuquerque again, without quite as many fragments of fear as last time!

The authors did what they set out to do. Beautiful Christian Fairy Tale retellings that show honor to the original stories, and The Master Storyteller. Each of these faith filled Fairy Tale adaptations will make you laugh, make you think, and quite likely appreciate God just a little bit more!

I would definitely recommend this collection of fairy tales with a modern twist to any reader 13+!

Melanie Dickerson’s Christian Fairy Tale Adaptations

Melanie Dickerson is known for her Christian fairy tale adaptations, and has written quite a few really powerful stories!

In the Fairy Tale Romance series, she’s created an interconnected world of fairy tale retellings that is so much fun! There are 11 books in the series at this time. I haven’t read all of them, but the ones I have, have been incredible!!

A Rapunzel Retelling

The Golden Braid is a Rapunzel retelling that you won’t soon forget. Rapunzel has quite an adventure, and between Sir Gerek and “mother dearest” she’s got a lot of things to figure out!

The Little Mermaid Retold

In the Silent Songbird, you’ll meet new fairy tale adaptations of Ariel and the Prince, and unravel some major deceptions that could cause disaster if they’re not very very careful.

A Few Other Great Melanie Dickerson Fairy Tale Retellings

Amanda Tero’s Christian Fairy Tale Adaptations: Tales of Faith

I recently discovered Amanda Tero on Instagram, when her second Tales of Faith book was on sale. I couldn’t put it down!

Her Cinderella Christian Fairy Tale adaptation was unique in that the ‘Prince’ was the father, seeking his daughter who was stolen from him, and Cinderella had no idea there was a good father searching for her. I absolutely loved this illustration of God the Father searching for his lost children.

I haven’t had the opportunity to read the other two yet, but both Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood sound great too.

I have a copy of her Packhorse Librarian story that I am eager to read, as well.
